In order to perform construction work in Tennessee, you must be licensed by the Department of Commerce and Insurance. For assistance with information on Workers' Compensation insurance contact the state's Treasury Department at (615) 741-2734. To find out if a contractor is licensed by the state, click here, or call (615) 741-8307. If you need to apply for a license contact Board for Licensing Contractors, or call (615) 741-8307. There are some important items you must include with your application: referece letter from a past employer or customer who can comment on your work, a current financial statement, a copy of your charter if you are a Tennessee corporation; or a Certificate of Authority if you are not. To obtain a license from the Board you will have to pass a business and law exam, and possibly a trade exam with a minimum score of 70%. Exams are given by PSI Exams, you can also reach them by phone at (800) 733-9267. There is a $250 norefundable fee to file an application to get your license. A license is good for two years, the renewal fee is $200. Tennessee has reciprocity agreements with Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina.
